Despite its imposing size, the Irish Wolfhound is a gentle, friendly animal that is trustworthy with children. Irish Wolfhounds are friendly with strangers, but may deter intruders simply by their intimidating size. It is important to train an Irish Wolfhound when it is a puppy so that it can be managed as a massive adult. Irish Wolfhounds generally get along well with other pets. This giant breed certainly needs a large yard with a high, secure fence.

Irish Wolfhounds may date back earlier than the first century B.C. The Irish Wolfhound may have contributed to the extinction of the wolf and wild boar in Ireland. At one time, only royalty were allowed to own Irish Wolfhounds.
