Despite its imposing size, the Irish Wolfhound is a gentle, friendly animal that is trustworthy with children. Irish Wolfhounds are friendly with strangers, but may deter intruders simply by their intimidating size. It is important to train an Irish Wolfhound when it is a puppy so that it can be managed as a massive adult. Irish Wolfhounds generally get along well with other pets. This giant breed certainly needs a large yard with a high, secure fence.

Irish Wolfhound Trivia: Irish Wolfhounds may have been used in arena fighting in the Roman Empire and were said to have been able to take out lions, wolves, wild boar, and armored cavalry! An Irish Wolfhound can reach seven feet in height standing on its hind legs and can weigh as much as 180 pounds, about the size of a small pony! Irish Wolfhounds may date back earlier than the first century B.C. The Irish Wolfhound may have contributed to the extinction of the wolf and wild boar in Ireland. At one time, only royalty were allowed to own Irish Wolfhounds.
