Rescue Me ID: 16-12-16-00368Daizee (female)

Irish Wolfhound Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed

We adopted Daizee over 2 years ago after she had a surgery for a large benign tumor removed on her back. She was still healing & her owner could not afford the surgery so gave her up. On 11/29/16 we arrived home to find that Daizee had been purposely let out & hit by a big truck on a busy county road even though 3 latching systems were in place on our gate. We were told by 2 unknown neighbors that they had seen a guy getting in his big truck leaving her there flopping around with 2 very broken front legs in 4 places, and broken bones protruding from her legs. We rushed her to the hospital & then were shockingly told that Daizee's injuries ... (Read More)were 'inconsistent with being hit by a vehicle.' In fact, her injuries looked more like she was beaten around her head & then a pipe was swung to break both her front legs. Daizee is a gentle giant & is good even with chickens and ducks, as well as little kids, whom she loves, and other dogs, cows & horses. We believe this is a result of both of our neighbors on either side of us, who stated they would let our animals out to be hit on the road & we would be liable, about 3 months ago. We did file a sheriffs report over this. We never expected this to actually happen, as the sheriff did come out & talk to them stating if they did that, they would be arrested for criminal mischief. This brings us back to the guy who adamantly said he hit her with his truck. He was highly unsympathetic, and no one saw him hit her with his truck. He was getting into his truck to leave. That's all they saw. They stopped him & demanded his info, which he very reluctantly gave, but did give up, because one was writing down his plate number. We called him 3 days later, and his beginning story did not match his ending story. He also stated he called & reported Daizee to Lake County Animal Control - but he lied. AC says NOTHING was reported. NOTHING. And they do keep records. We believe he is friends of our neighbors & we believe our neighbors let her out, and then called him to do his damage. We cannot prove anything yet, but we continue to work on it. Daizee's injuries could cost $6,000 to $8,000 to install surgical plates in both her legs so she can heal. We have a fund set up for her and if we can raise at least $4,500 UF in Gainesville will give us $2,000 for her surgery & they will bill us for the balance. She has 4 weeks with before calcium starts to build on her legs, which are currently, 1 is casted, 1 is splinted. She requires full care & lays on towels on the floor, either upright or on her side. Her legs must be kept horizontal. If anyone would help in caring for her, please contact me. Or if anyone knows a surgeon veterinarian who could implant plates cheaper than UF, please contact me. This is not her fault and she's a very good dog & will protect your family at night or when you are not home, as she has done with us on our fenced acreage. If anyone wants to adopt and rescue this dog so she can receive her surgery and heal, we will do what is best for Daizee. She is in great health, not in pain as she is eating & wagging her tail. She does try to walk on her cast & splint, but it is absolutely mandatory that she does not do this. If the plates were installed, she could walk in 3 days. Otherwise, the cast/splint will take over 10 weeks to heal, and right now her bones are very crooked according to the xrays, but the Vet has done what was within our $1300 budget so far. If anyone can help, please let me know. This is an unusual case & we believe Daizee is the victim of Animal Cruelty in Florida. UF says they can do a Forensic Study to see how she broke her legs, but since there is no road rash, no other injuries, except for the protruding bones in her front legs, and her head was a little swollen with a dilated eye, this is why all vets believe this was not a vehicle accident. In Florida, you can be held liable for hitting a dog, which is personal property, and not notifying the owner. You take your chances on leaving, and getting caught, which is what the guy who owns a lawn care company did when he got caught. We haven't pursued this yet, because we are focused on getting help for Daizee and it does take 2 to 3 people to move her. We do have an old office chair set up that her front legs are horizontal, and she can stand up on her back legs, but this does take 2 to 3 people to get her moving around, but constantly making sure her front legs stay horizontal. Thank you & we appreciate you reading this. If she does not get the surgery with implanted plates, she may not heal correctly and she could be euthanized. This would be horrible since she has tons of life left in her and she's just a great dog. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Irish Wolfhound in Florida
Irish Wolfhound Dogs can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. The Irish Wolfhound is an enormous dog rivaling the Great Dane in height. Despite its imposing size, the Irish Wolfhound is a gentle, friendly animal that is trustworthy with children. Irish Wolfhounds are friendly with strangers, but may deter intruders simply by their intimidating size. It is important to train an Irish Wolfhound when it is a puppy so that it can be managed as a massive adult. Irish Wolfhounds generally get along well with other pets. This giant breed certainly needs a large yard with a high, secure fence.

lnteresting Irish Wolfhound Trivia Low-Cost Florida Spay & Neuter Clinics
Irish Wolfhounds may have been used in arena fighting in the Roman Empire and were said to have been able to take out lions, wolves, wild boar, and armored cavalry! An Irish Wolfhound can reach seven feet in height standing on its hind legs and can weigh as much as 180 pounds, about the size of a small pony! The Irish Wolfhound may have contributed to the extinction of the wolf and wild boar in Ireland.
